After painting the music scene “Black & Gold” back in 2008 (and garnering a Grammy nomination), Australian singer-songwriter Sam Sparro has returned with a much paler hue in hand, the club-centric “Pink Cloud.”
Sparro describes “Pink Cloud” as his “tribute to the house music I grew up with.” For someone who turned 28 only this past November, somehow he’s still managed to capture the spirit of early ’90s clubbing, when soulful mixes from Masters At Work and David Morales dazzled the sweaty masses.
Musically, “Pink Cloud” most closely resembles Crystal Waters’ “Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless),” and Sparro does seem to have a soft spot for the 1991 club #1 (even if he was just nine at the time). He covered the “La da dee, la dee da” classic as a B-side to “Pocket,” the third and final single off Sparro’s eponymous debut, a song you’ve probably never heard.
Sparro, whose sophomore album, Return To Paradise, is coming soon, considers “Pink Cloud” an “art project” rather than a proper single. It’s an apt description, considering the song doesn’t really feature much in the way of vocals (true to classic house), with Sparro only coming out front and center in the colorfully outré music video directed by Franc Fernandez, the man who famously clothed Lady Gaga in cuts of meat.
Sparro is offering “Pink Cloud” as a free download, part of an EP that features three mixes paired with another equally stellar throwback club track, “Yous A Nasty.” Sparro’s latest musical offering may not be a single per se, but based on public reaction, “Pink Cloud” is certainly serving as some very savvy promotion.
