Wanna know a surefire way to snag my attention? Title your track after the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. It worked like a gem for singer-songwriter Rumer a while ago, and now DJ/producer Moon Boots has grabbed my eardrums with his “Aretha,” albeit via a vastly different kind of sound.
Out now on Nervous Records‘ new indie dance sub-label Nurvous, Moon Boots’ “Aretha” is based on a much earlier tribute that paid R-E-S-P-E-C-T to the Detroit diva. The vocal samples are taken from British band Scritti Politti’s 1984 #4 Billboard dance hit, “Wood Beez (Pray Like Aretha Franklin).” Interestingly, “Wood Beez” was produced by Arif Mardin, who had a hand in some of Aretha’s classic 1970s records, like “Rock Steady” and “Day Dreaming.”
Touching back down on the modern day, Moon Boots’ sparkling Original Mix of “Aretha” has a funky disco feel:
I’m also digging Kid Color‘s ’88 Cruiser Remix, even as the Scritti Politti samples have been excised. Beginning as a bumpin’ mid-70s number, the mix skips forward a decade, flowering into a full-on piano house track:
The full “Aretha” release also includes a Moon Boots dub, plus additional remixes from ColeCo and Zimmer. The whole set is stellar, so really you can’t go wrong.
