Primary 1‘s “Never Know” been bumping around the series of tubes for a bit since the November premiere of the song’s music video, but this single from UK synthpop producer Joe Flory has yet to surface on iTunes or any other legit U.S. download service. That status means my post about it had been left to gather a light layer of dust in my drafts folder.
But as 2010 comes to a close and I clear some cobwebs from the Popservations attic, “Never Know” is still one of those songs that I want to share before the year’s out. Featuring Late Of The Pier’s Sam Eastgate (going by the nom de musique Harry Tuttle), Primary 1’s “Never Know” sounds a bit like David Bowie fronting early ’80s Prince or Scritti Politti circa “Perfect Way.” Though the original version of “Never Know” remains frustratingly elusive, a few remixes are available as free downloads.
I’ll get to those links in a second, but first, check out the colortastic music video for “Never Know” that caught everyone’s eye. Working with a very specific palette of hues that appear on various props and costumes and as makeup (think a much brighter Dick Tracy), Primary 1’s clip really pops, as does the tune itself:
Flory, who toured with Ellie Goulding earlier this year, is prepping Primary 1’s debut album for Atlantic, on which “Never Know” will appear. Again, I can’t find a legit download of the original version of the song, but you can snag several free remixes.
Free download of “Never Know” (Gucci Vamp Remix and The Shoes Remix) via Primary 1’s website, and the 2-step Submerse Remix via XLR8R.
You’ll find more free tunes on the Primary 1 website, plus sign up for the email list and get Flory’s homemade Mess Detective album, his collaboration with The Cardgians’ Nina Persson (“The Blues”), and two other freebies.
