Track of the Moment

Adele on shuffle

I’ve had Adele‘s new single, “Rolling In The Deep” on repeat since it was released in November. The singer’s sophomore album, 21, has been out for over a week in the UK, but it won’t arrive in the U.S. until February 22.

So I was happy to see that a remix of “Rolling In The Deep” by The xx’s Jamie Smith, which the UK also got early dibs on, showed up on iTunes today. Hopefully, this rework will tide over Adele fans on this side of the Atlantic who are eagerly awaiting 21‘s release. (Her label must have some concern about the interim, launching a “21 Days of Adele” countdown today on her website.)

The quiet, non-singing member of The xx in charge of digital samples and drum machines, Jamie Smith also doubles as producer for the Mercury Award-winning band (which shares a label, XL Recordings, with Adele). For “Rolling In The Deep,” Smith strips the track of everything but Adele’s vocals, slowed down in parts to a deep, near-male moan. He sets her emotional performance against a “shuffle” of schoolyard hand-claps and barely-there keyboard plinks and triggered beats.

It might take a couple of spins for what Smith has done to sink in, especially if, like me, you’ve committed Adele’s original version to memory. But now we’ve got two takes to put on repeat.

I did decide that February 22 is much too long to wait for 21, so after a quick cost-benefit analysis, I sprang for an import. The limited-edition version I picked up via CD Wow! adds a bonus “Rolling In The Deep” single with a non-album track.
