A new Belinda Carlisle hits collection wouldn’t typically merit mention — four compilations of The Go-Go’s frontwoman’s solo material have appeared over the years — but today’s release of ICON: Best of Belinda Carlisle is newsworthy as it features “Sun,” her first new U.S. single in over 15 years.
“Sun,” which kicks off ICON, was co-penned by Carlisle, her Go-Go’s bandmate Jane Wiedlin, and L.A. singer-songwriter Gabe Lopez. Wiedlin also contributes backing vocals on the song, which was produced by Ian Masterson (Dannii Minogue, Bananarama).
“When I first heard ‘Sun,’ I immediately knew I had to record it,” Carlisle writes on her website. “It’s the best song I’ve recorded since ‘Heaven Is A Place on Earth,’ and I’m really excited for everyone to hear it!”
With a soaring supernova of a chorus — the kind that made David Guetta & Kelly Rowland’s “When Love Takes Over” so irresistible — Carlisle shines on the dance-pop “Sun.” It’s so wonderful to have her back with something new, confidently venturing into current styles and sounding this amazing.
“My voice is much more mature now,” Carlisle said in a recent CBS News interview. “I think I am a better singer absolutely. My vocal tones are still the same.”
