As mentioned in a post last month, “Obsession” is the single that Sky Ferreira‘s record label has selected as her debut in States, though I’m still quite taken with the UK’s pick, “One.”
Capitol Records certainly seems like it’s making a concerted effort to push the song, tacking “Obsession” on to the latest edition of Now That’s What I Call Music! and garnering a slot on the soundtrack to The CW’s The Vampire Diaries, released just yesterday.
A music video premiered a couple of weeks back, though I’m less confident it will help propel Ferreira forward. With a song titled “Obsession,” I get the stalker-fan storyline (even if it’s an obvious choice of treatment), but casting actor Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs‘ Mr. Blonde) as the object of Ferreira’s desire comes off a wee bit creepy. Sure, Madsen is a less obvious focus (and therefore more original), but there’s a 35-year age difference between the two (he’s 53; she’s 18). Is this the smartest move to build brand Ferreira? Because if recent events have taught us anything, it’s that it’s hard to ignore the gap.
Still, questionable music-video antics aside, I’m finding it hard to shake this Ryan Tedder-penned tune. I hope radio programmers and casual fans of pop music simply look past the oddness of the clip and forge their own path to “Obsession.” Ferreira really is some of the freshest musical talent to arrive on the scene in some time (or at least since Lady Gaga). Clearer evidence of that is obvious in “One.”
