Bright Light Bright Light’s ‘Moment’ Has Finally Arrived
August 8, 2011 2 CommentsNearly a year after Bright Light Bright Light issued debut single “Love Part II” exclusively in the UK, leaving US fans to take the ‘expensive import’ route, the geographical divide snaps shut with the simultaneous digital release of new single “Disco Moment” on both sides of the Atlantic.
I could go on and on about Rod Thomas’ one-man synthpop project (as I have and most certainly will again), but all the chatter is more than earned. As I described “Disco Moment” back in June when the song’s music video premiered, it’s like discovering Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” has a twin brother. I’m powerless to resist such sad-disco tunes, particularly one as well written and produced as this.
“It’s semi-autobiographical,” Thomas told The Guardian. I wanted to write a song that sounded like the big emotional dance scene in a John Hughes film –- euphoric but also a bit sad. A ‘disco moment’ is that time you have when you’re having the time of your life, like when your favourite song comes on in a club, or when everything feels amazing and you’re like ‘Life is great!’ and the song is about watching someone you’re meant to be close to have that moment in front of you, but you’re not included.”
Here again is the music video with its art-installation vibe, what with all the TV-headed extras with changing facial expressions. I don’t know what it all means, but with a soundtrack as good as “Disco Moment,” what more needs to be said?
Remixes of “Disco Moment” (including a fantastic one by Fear Of Tigers) and a new b-side (!) arrive on September 19, with Bright Light Bright Light’s debut LP coming at the start of 2012.
