Track of the Moment

Get down with the Dom-ocratic party

Missed this one in time for Independence Day playlists, but Dom‘s “Living In America” doesn’t need the occasion of a national holiday to sound massive blasting out of speakers this summer.

Not a cover of James Brown’s hit from Rocky 4, the Massachusetts band’s “Living In America” sounds like MGMT crossed with the kind of dense trance synths so omnipresent today’s biggest chart hits. The track’s actually been out since early last year, as has Dom’s EP, Sun Bronzed Greek Gods, which was re-released in February via Astralwerks.

While mononymed frontman Dom may singing, “It’s so sexy to be living in America,” his bio leaves me unsure whether that boast is to be believed. Given up for adoption at age 8 though his siblings stayed with his mother, Dom subsequently bounced around several foster homes and had run-ins with the law. Music, however, was his refuge, so perhaps “Living In America” isn’t a cynical sentiment (or even “sort of facetious”), but rather brave-faced hope for better days ahead. And that’s something we can all rally around, regardless of background or personal history.

Following last year’s found-footage video for “Living In America,” a brand-new clip premiered a couple of weeks ago. Featuring Dom and his bandmates Bobby, Erik, and Cosmo horsing around on camera, the music video also includes a couple of girls in bikini tops and a naked male butt, in case you’re watching at work and the powers-that-be frown upon that sort of thing.

Heads-up to 2012 Republican presidential candidates in need of theme music, a group that historically picks songs by liberals who aren’t so flattered in return. “Politicians can totally use [“Living In America”] at campaigns as long as they pay me,” says Dom. Sounds like democracy in action (and the free market at play) to me.
