Ellie Goulding contributes a quartet of songs to the soundtrack for the upcoming sci-fi film, Divergent. Two are previously released (“Dead In The Water,” “My Blood”), another is a remix (“Hanging On” by I See MONSTAS), but there’s a brand-new track in the mix too, “Beating Heart.”
Divergent director Neil Burger considers Goulding “the inner voice of Tris,” the film’s female protagonist, explaining why her music is so heavily featured on the soundtrack. Goulding also contributed vocals to the film’s score, composed by Junkie XL and executive produced by Hans Zimmer. “I got to jam, like you would jam on a guitar, but just with my voice,” Goulding told Entertainment Weekly.
“Beating Hearts” echoes the ping-ponging atmospherics of Goulding’s breakthrough song, “Lights,” with this moodier track designed to provide the sort of cathartic release required at the end of film like Divergent. The hero lives to fight another day, and assumedly, Goulding will also contribute to further films in the series.
