Track of the Moment

End Of A Chapter For Florrie

After doing the DIY thing for over two years, first releasing her music for free and then via iTunes (including turning out one of 2011’s top EPs), Florrie has revealed she’s gearing up to sign with a major label. The move might come as a surprise to some fans of the indie popster, but the drummer/singer/songwriter always planned to do it if and when the time was right. And so it is.

But before signing on the dotted line — banking on the promise of two big songs that have both Florrie and her suitors excited — she’s released a new EP, Late. Outside of the pair she’s keeping on reserve, Florrie says the four tracks on Late comprise “the most interesting and best stuff I had from the new songs I’ve written.”

The super-repetitive “Shot You Down” aside (though it really could have been something), Late offers a tight trio of tunes. The propulsive “I’m Gonna Get You Back” has its charms, as does the assertive electro-disco of “Every Inch.” But “To The End” earns Track of the Moment status, a total emotional banger (“tragically uplifting” in Florrie parlance) that incorporates both classical piano and a final third that’s a melodic cousin to the close-out of New Radicals’ “You Get What You Give.”

And if collaborations between pop contemporaries get you going, it must be noted that Florrie co-wrote “To The End” with Norwegian singer-songwriter, Annie.

Who knows what the future holds for Florrie once she’s under the aegis of a major label, but with songs that surpass these, they’d better do right by her.
