There’s been a startling dearth of homegrown pop groups in the U.S. for far too long, which is one reason why HAIM is such a breath of fresh air.
While the Los Angeles sister act’s sound has previously drawn comparisons to Fleetwood Mac, HAIM’s new single, “The Wire,” kicks off with a hefty, loping beat and guitar squiggles reminiscent of another band associated with the ’70s California scene, The Eagles and their 1979 hit, “Heartache Tonight.” “The Wire” also has an unlucky-in-love theme, but any similarities end there as Este, Danielle, and Alana venture down a much poppier path. Still, HAIM is keeping it SoCal even as they go their own way.
“The Wire” is the lead single from HAIM’s debut album, Days Are Gone, out September 30. The music video premiered last week, with The Lonely Island‘s Jorma Taccone among the three men whose hearts are broken by the sisters Haim. Not the treatment I would have picked for HAIM’s song — it’s too broadly goofy — but I know (I know, I know, I know) that they’re gonna be okay anyway.
