Long a staple of moviemaking, pop music isn’t without the occasional MacGuffin.
The title of Alison Valentine‘s introductory single, “Peanut Butter,” doesn’t accurately portend the sparkling, tropical discopop that awaits, even though the sticky stuff does figure into the song’s chorus. For those who might have difficulty deciphering the robo-tweaked lyrics, it’s “Spread my love like peanut butter all over my body, baby,” which conjures a certain urban legend that I’m much too polite to repeat.
The upstart New York City singer (and current NYU student) does have perfect timing, with “Peanut Butter” providing a perfect soundtrack for the dog days of summer. The most recent signee to The Knocks‘ label, Heavy Roc Music, Valentine describes “Peanut Butter” as “SebastiAn and Janet Jackson go to the beach with the Tom Tom Club.” That’s a mixture worth taking down from the shelf and spreading all over.
The music video for “Peanut Butter” features Valentine on the beach, awaiting the arrival of a surfboard-bearing beauhunk making his way to her from the concrete jungle. His accessory is something of a MacGuffin, as it does ultimately prove unnecessary to the couple’s reunion.
Valentine’s debut EP, Swimming Pool Sounds, is forthcoming.
