While Beyoncé received glowing notices for her in-concert tribute to Michael Jackson, “Halo” peaked in late May.
Plus, it’s summer and we need something less contemplative. Something with a bit more oomph. Something a lot like “Sweet Dreams,” the synthastic sixth single from the gift that keeps on giving, I Am… Sasha Fierce. On Tuesday, “Sweet Dreams” was issued as a double-A side digital single, paired with “Ego,” though that tune is already headed down the chart after peaking at #43. (Apparently “Ego” wasn’t too big, but still didn’t fit.)
“Sweet Dreams” is nearly perfect as originally recorded (even nicking a bit from MJ’s “Beat It”), but I was looking forward to the eventual release of the club mixes. Too bad there are only two to purchase, a less than thrilling electro-tinged trip from OK DAC and a serviceable take from Karmatronic. Well, three, if you count the Harlan Pepper & AG III remix, included earlier on the recent Above And Beyoncé set.
None of these three elevates the original quite like the Smash Mode mix, which is flawless. And, unfortunately, only available as DJ promo. But thanks to YouTube, you too can enjoy this muscular mix, complete with its genius stuttering of “on” around 3:08:
Actually that’s not the only “Sweet Dreams” mix we’re missing out on, as there are several others (like the Steve Pitron & Max Sanna re-work). But you really can’t go wrong with remixed Beyoncé, and I’ll happily bop along to whatever’s being offered. Turn the lights on!
