“Together” is the sole brand-new song on the Pet Shop Boys‘ forthcoming greatest hits, Ultimate Pet Shop Boys, a 19-tracker that spans from “West End Girls” to “Love etc.” If you think the duo is dangerously approaching Tina Turner territory with the number of career compilations issued, you’re me (though to be completely fair, the Pet Shop Boys’ list does include a newspaper freebie and a Brazil-only release).
That doesn’t mean I won’t open my wallet wide for Ultimate, though I suggest superfans skip the single-disc set and spring instead for the Special Edition, which includes a DVD that holds a treasure trove of the duo’s BBC performances trough the years.
As for “Together,” earlier today Neil and Chris released a teaser for their new tune, written and produced with former Xenomania-er Tim Powell (who was on board for “Love etc.”). As one might expect of the Pets, “Together” does sound very “today,” particularly when those trancey synths come in toward the end of the :30 snippet:
Ultimate Pet Shop Boys is out in the UK on 11/1. The single release of “Together” is scheduled for 11/29 (another UK date), comprised of a 2-CD and digital release that features remixes (of course!) plus covers of Dave Clark Five (“Glad All Over”) and Kate McGarrigle (“I Cried For Us”). A music video for “Together” is being shot later this month.
