J. Lo Wants To ‘Dance Again’

As the saying goes, if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it. In pop music, the same (mostly) holds true — see the Four Tops’ “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)” and “It’s The Same Old Song.” Or Katy Perry and Dr. Luke.

A year ago, Jennifer Lopez released “On The Floor,” a track produced by RedOne (Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj) and featuring Miami rapper Pitbull. The result was a #3 smash for Lopez, who hadn’t scored a hit since 2005’s “Get Right,” which reached #12. Unfortunately, the follow-ups to “On The Floor,” “I’m Into You” and “Papi,” never cracked the Top 40 (both did, however, reach #1 on the Billboard Dance/Club Play chart).

So it’s no wonder that, for her latest single, “Dance Again,” Lopez revisits the successful “On The Floor” formula. RedOne is back behind the board for another club-focused track, with Pitbull once again set loose to add his rhymery to the proceedings.

But “Dance Again” fails as a true carbon copy of “On The Floor” in one very obvious way. It’s a thousand times better, a jubilant declaration of one’s belief in love (and the dance). This is most evident in the chorus, the total of which goes, “I wanna dance, and love, and dance again. I wanna dance, and love, and dance again.” Brilliant.

“Dance Again” isn’t perfect, primarily because of Pitbull. I’d prefer to lop his introductory bit off the top, and his mid-song “rap” is made only mildly more tolerable as his “flow” is set against a very Robin S beat. Follow along in the lyrics video, and you’ll also discover, as I did, that Pitbull does not intone, “Hugh Heffer,” but rather, “Hugh Hef, uh.”

I can already picture the confetti cannons firing in the final chorus of during J. Lo’s inevitable pre-taped performance of “Dance Again” on American Idol.
