Jessie J gets in the game with ‘Domino’

If you don’t slavishly follow these things and watched the MTV VMAs on Sunday night (and a record number did tune in, giving the show its biggest-ever audience), you might have wondered just who the dark-haired female in the cast was, ensconced in an all-white throne and singing into each commercial break.

Well, that’s Jessie J. The UK pop singer-songwriter had a single out earlier this year, “Price Tag”, a Dr. Luke production (Katy Perry, Ke$ha) that cashed out at #23 on the Billboard Hot 100. Opening for the second leg of Katy Perry’s North American California Dreams Tour, Jessie J decamped to Dr. Luke’s studio again to craft a few new songs that might catch fire here (she has fared a bit better back home, and let’s not forget, did co-write Miley Cyrus’ “Party In The U.S.A.”)

On Sunday’s VMAs, Jessie J premiered one of the fruits of those labors, “Domino.” Singing a bunch of others’ hits before and after, including Perry’s “Firework,” only the song’s unfamiliarity and the fact that she stood up to do that one might have tipped you off that there was something different and worth taking note of.

With its production pedigree, “Domino” could easily slide right onto Teenage Dream, and Jessie J does sounds more than a little like Katy Perry on it. Heck, even the description “skin tight” makes an appearance. While formulaic, I’ve got no issue with any of the above. “Domino” might just be the trick to making Jessie J happen here:

Though plans for an expanded edition of Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream have been discussed since last fall, it looks less likely every day, with Perry having racked five consecutive #1 hits from the album (“California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Firework,” “E.T.,” “Last Friday Night”), tying Michael Jackson’s feat from Bad. Perry’s label could still pull a couple of singles from it (“Hummingbird Heartbeat” and “Pearl,” perhaps?) if so desired, and save any new tunes for an entirely different effort next year.
