While Adele again proved herself a reliable hoot and Kelly Clarkson remains a self-deprecating delight, the real winner at last night’s 55th Annual Grammys was Justin Timberlake — and he wasn’t even nominated. Backed by an impressively big band, JT performed new single “Suit & Tie” with Jay-Z and then segued into “Pusher Love Girl,” another new track from his forthcoming third album, The 20/20 Experience, out March 19.
Following the festivities at the Staples Center, Timberlake released another new song, the Timbaland-produced “Mirrors.” A solid love song, it’s by far the best out of the three 20/20 tracks we’ve heard thus far, though the production doesn’t exactly rewrite the rules of pop — mostly.
“Mirrors” plays it safe for the first five of its eight (!) minutes before things get interesting — JT croons over a looped background chant and some minimalist ivory tickling. Just as “Suit & Tie” could have done with some tailoring (lopping off the intro and jettisoning Jay-Z), “Mirrors” demands a more digestible edit.
