For as long as I’ve been aware of Katy B, the “B” has reliably stood for “beats.” So exposed to the first minute of “Crying For No Reason,” the first single from her forthcoming sophomore album, Little Red, I feared the Londoner had lost her way, veering off into “balladeer” (and possibly a very “boring” one at that).
Thankfully, this time through the “B” stands for “building.” Because after the comparatively subdued first 75 seconds, “Crying For No Reason” flowers into something quite epic. Listening to the dramatic sweep of Katy B’s latest, it’s as if Sugababes were crossing the electro tundra of Madonna’s “Frozen.”
While I wait for someone to wake up Victor Calderone from hibernation for a proper remix, two from Infinity Ink and Tom Shortez will have to do.
