While Kelly Clarkson debuted the lyric video for “Underneath The Tree” last week, I had the propriety to postpone any mention of her holiday season contribution until the pumpkins had been put away and Starbucks rolled out its red cups.
Written by Clarkson and producer Greg Kurstin (“Stronger,” “People Like Us”), “Underneath The Tree” is one of five original compositions included on her excellent new Christmas album, Wrapped In Red, released last week. (My December was already taken as a title.) For the project, which Clarkson says is her “favorite thing she’s ever been a part of on the planet,” Kurstin looked to the genre’s classics, including Phil Spector’s A Christmas Gift For You, released 50 years ago this month.
Sprightly piano, glockenspiel, and saxophone light up Clarkson’s “Tree” in a very ’60s fashion. Time to make some merry — sorry, Thanksgiving!
“Underneath The Tree” is currently heard in the TV commercial for the new film, About Time. You’ll recall that Clarkson’s “The Trouble With Love Is” was featured in 2003’s Love Actually, also directed by Richard Curtis. That now-classic holiday film is celebrating its 10th anniversary.
And for that genuine ’60s feel, turn on the hi-fi this holiday season and spin Wrapped In Red on vinyl. It’s the first time any of Clarkson’s albums have been been released on vinyl, and this one’s been appropriately pressed in red.
