Kosheen’s ‘New One’

Kosheen secured a permanent place in my music library with the release of “Hide U” in 2001 (cue the initially rejected and now classic John Creamer & Stephane K mix). Now the Bristol, UK-based trio have released “Get A New One,” the fittingly titled first single from their fourth album, Independence, due in April.

2007’s Damage, with its shades of Depeche Mode, found Kosheen branching out beyond their trip-hop/breakbeat roots while still serving up tracks centered on those signature sounds. Five years after that bridge release, the fact that “Get A New One” was picked to come first signals the band’s move into more mainstream electro-pop territory (well, if Goldfrapp can be considered mainstream).

The synth hook of “Get A New One” isn’t entirely dissimilar from La Roux’s “Bulletproof” —  which, let’s recall, hit #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 — though Sian Evans’ strong vocals remain the real pull. I’m sure some longtime Kosheen devotees might turn up their noses at “Get A New One,” but the shift in tone suits the group. Jump into the fury:

As has been their habit, Kosheen has issued a slew of remixes of “Get A New One.” Kosheen DJs, Dubspeeka, and Kalms provide deep club vibes, with Jakes, Ways & Means, and Tech Itch veering away from four-on-the-floor into frenetic breakbeat land. Maybe those new ones will satisfy the tongue-clacking diehards.
