Not only is Baz Luhrmann’s big-screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby one of 2020’s most anticipated films (watch the trailer here), the soundtrack is also much buzzed about. If you haven’t seen the tracklisting — a mix of originals and newly recorded covers from artists across the musical spectrum — you’ll understand why it’s getting attention.

For those who remember the glory days of soundtracks, an assemblage like that is all too rare in the digital age.
Several tracks have made their debut online in the past couple of weeks, but the first official single from The Great Gatsby soundtrack is Lana Del Rey‘s “Young And Beautiful.” Co-written with the incomparable Rick Nowels (a collaborator on both Born To Die and Paradise), Del Rey’s ballad serves as the film’s main theme. It’s all one could hope for in that regard: dramatic, haunting, majestic.
The strings are particularly well arranged and superbly employed on “Young And Beautiful.” The orchestral version, which features little else, is stunning:
But why be satisfied with just two versions of “Young And Beautiful”? I’m putting in a request for an epic club mix, something that retains the drama — and especially those strings.
