Working a similarly smoky soul vibe that’s gotten tongues wagging for Jessie Ware (including mine), Laura Welsh is one to watch. Actually, the London singer-songwriter has been in the sights of some folks for several months. “Hollow Drum” debuted last fall and was featured on Grey’s Anatomy earlier this year. “Unravel,” co-written and produced by Dev Hynes (Solange, Sky Ferreira) during a Christmas Eve session, followed in March.
But it was only a few days ago that my attention turned to Welsh and her new single, “Cold Front,” all thanks to a tweet from Boy George. Calling it “Snow white sexy funk,” he compared the song to Carly Simon’s “Why,” her 1982 single written and produced by Chic’s Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers.
This time, Robin Hannibal (Rhye, Quadron) is behind the board, with Welsh’s “Cold Front” far from icy in its slinky come on. The music video for “Cold Front” is a beauty to behold too.
Laura Welsh – “Cold Front” is out July 14 in the UK, along with two remixes and a dub. Grab a free download of “Hollow Drum” via her Tumblr.
