The fact that you’re reading this post pretty much negates what I’m about to posit, but if you were to have heard Marina and the Diamonds‘ latest single, “Primadonna,” you might have assumed it was one of the new tracks on Katy Perry’s expanded Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection.
And that’s because “Primadonna” shares some major DNA with Perry’s catchiest tunes, namely pop maestro Dr. Luke, who co-produced the track with Cirkut. (The pair also teamed up for the former Mrs. Russell Brand’s current single, “Piece Of Me”). Written by Marina Diamandis and Julie Frost (Madonna’s “Masterpiece,” Beyoncé’s “Countdown”), “Primadonna” is the first official single from Electra Heart, a concept album that explores a non-American’s view of the American dream via an alter ego. Diamandis described the project thusly to Popjustice:
“Electra Heart is the antithesis of everything that I stand for. And the point of introducing her and building a whole concept around her is that she stands for the corrupt side of American ideology, and basically that’s the corruption of yourself. My worst fear — that’s anyone’s worst fear — is losing myself and becoming a vacuous person. And that happens a lot when you’re very ambitious.”
So is Electra Heart the anti-Sasha Fierce? Is Dr. Luke’s earwormy pop acceptable in Electra Heart’s fictional world, but something the very real Marina Diamandis actually looks down upon? Is “Primadonna,” and the fact it serves as the album’s first single, just a big goof, some sort of meta commentary on where music stands in 2012?
I’m exhausted. Pop music really shouldn’t be this complicated (the real genius of Katy Perry’s oeuvre). Notwithstanding all of the alter-ego stuff (though I’m digging Marina’s blonde Audrey Horne look), “Primadonna” remains a solid single, no joke.
