Maroon 5 Makes The Call

April 19, 2012 1 Comment

Last summer, “Moves Like Jagger” gave Maroon 5 a much needed shot in the arm after the disappointing reception given their 2010 album, Hands All Over. The disco-inflected #1 hit, featuring guest vocals from Adam Levine’s fellow Voice coach Christina Aguilera, marked the first time the band had worked with outside writers.

Having found success down the songwriting road previously untraveled, Maroon 5 is poised to go full-tilt pop on Overexposed, their fourth studio album due June 26. “We love pop music,” Levine tweeted, “and I feel like on this record we fully embraced our pop side.” Indeed, as Overexposed‘s credits include platinum hitmakers Benny Blanco (Katy Perry, Ke$ha), Shellback (Pink, Usher), Ryan Tedder (Beyoncé, Adele), and Max Martin (Britney Spears, Katy Perry). Martin also serves as the album’s executive producer.

First single “Payphone” rings up the same team behind “Moves Like Jagger,” Benny Blanco and Shellback. The song features a rap from Wiz Khalifa — it’s practically a pop music requirement to feature on your single someone these days, though Levine says they didn’t want to have one. There’s some irony in Maroon 5’s quest for continued cultural relevance by coming out with song about a payphone, but I’ve spotted several here in San Francisco, a town that can’t seem to quit outmoded anything (see: streetcars, trolley cars). So if there is a joke to be made, it’s on us.

“Payphone” had its premiere on Monday during The Voice, with the lyric video following closely behind. Done in a comic-book style, it foreshadows what I assume will be a riff on Superman when Maroon 5’s proper video arrives, based on this photo of Adam Levine as a suited-up desk jockey.

“Moves Like Jagger” has had surprising staying power. This week, the single sits at #43 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking its 43rd week on the chart.

For those who prefer ‘classic’ Maroon 5, the band has a 10th anniversary edition of their breakthrough album Songs About Jane coming out on June 5. The expanded set will feature demos, unreleased material, videos and more.
