Adele cleaned up at last night’s Grammys, winning all six categories in which she was nominated. Her voice now recovered from last November’s throat surgery, her performance of “Rolling In The Deep” began with an acapella intro to prove just that. And thankfully, we got to hear Adele speak too, saying this at the podium as she accepted the Album of the Year trophy for ’21’:
This record is inspired by something that is really normal and everyone’s been through it, which is a rubbish relationship. And it’s gone on to do things that I can’t tell you how I feel about it, it’s been the most life-changing year.
In a 60 Minutes interview with Anderson Cooper that aired earlier in the evening (also with a brief acapella performance), Adele declared that she’s “madly in love,” prompting the question of whether she can write songs without having to endure a broken heart. “I can’t write another breakup record,” she told Cooper. “That would be a real cliché. It would be just like a boring, running theme. I think people would be like, ‘No, that’s enough now, cheer up.'”
Thank goodness, however, that there are other pop ladies — admittedly of comparatively lesser vocal talent — willing to lay bare the remains of relationships gone south. Katy Perry, whose divorce from Russell Brand was made final last week, is back with “Part Of Me,” a new single from the forthcoming expanded edition of Teenage Dream, subtitled The Complete Confection.
“Part Of Me” originally leaked in 2010, but now thanks to a spiffed-up production, reworked lyrics, and brilliant timing, the release provides Perry with the perfect pop opportunity to address her split with Brand in song. Though reportedly amicable, lyrics like “Throw your sticks and your stones, throw your bombs and your blows, but you’re not gonna break my soul,” cast ginormous shadows of doubt upon the couple’s smiley-faced settlement. Super-catchy (kudos to co-writer Bonnie McKee) with a demanding beat (hey there, Dr. Luke and Max Martin), this round goes to Team Katy.
If you missed Perry’s debut performance of “Part Of Me” on last night’s Grammy telecast, here’s the lyric video for the soon-to-be sixth #1 from Teenage Dream:
“Part Of Me” is one of three brand-new songs on Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, out March 27. The re-release includes the album’s 12 original tracks as well as versions of “E.T.” featuring Kanye West and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” featuring Missy Elliott, the Jon Brion-produced acoustic version of “The One That Got Away,” plus a seven-minute megamix of the album’s first six singles (five of which reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100).
