Pet Shop Boys Go ‘Electric’

Pet Shop Boys have released the details of their upcoming album, Electric. Out July 15, the set is produced by Stuart Price (Madonna, Kylie Minogue, The Killers) and is the first release on the veteran British duo’s newly formed label, x2 (or “times two”).

PetShopBoysElectricFeaturing eight Tennant-Lowe originals plus a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “The Last To Die,” Electric was recorded in London, Berlin, and Los Angeles over the last six months. In a statement posted on their website, Pet Shop Boys write: “Our latest album often evolves as a response to our previous album and, whereas Elysium had a reflective mood, Electric is pretty banging! And working with Stuart Price on a studio album is something we have wanted to do for a very long time.”

The album artwork, shown at right, was created by Farrow, continuing Pet Shop Boys’ collaboration with the design firm. Can’t help but see Electric‘s aqua zig-zag pattern as a complementary graphic interpretation of the sparkling waves on Elysium‘s cover.

Electric‘s lead track and first single, “Axis,” debuted in full today after being heard in the project’s teaser video that the duo shared in March (when the release date was June). The mostly wordless track is ‘pretty banging,’ as is, though a remix by German DJ/producer Boys Noize is forthcoming.

Here’s the tracklisting for Electric:

01 “Axis”
02 “Bolshoy”
03 “Love Is A Bourgeois Construct”
04 “Fluorescent”
05 “Inside A Dream”
06 “The Last To Die”
07 “Shouting In The Evening”
08 “Thursday” (featuring Example)
09 “Vocal”

Speaking to Stereogum about the new album, Neil Tennant compares “Thursday” to “West End Girls,” remarking that it has “that same sort of sound and atmosphere.” In that same interview, Chris Lowe says that he imagines Madonna doing the ‘Dress You Up’ dance to the music on the album. As if I couldn’t be more excited about Electric, even the duo’s new promo pic has Lowe sporting a BOY hat like he did on the “Love Comes Quickly” sleeve.

Pet Shop Boys have also announced North American tour dates, with some tickets (including VIP offerings) on sale now. Details here.
