With Calvin Harris’ help, Rihanna found love in a hopeless place — scoring a hit that spent 10 weeks at #1 — and now Scissor Sisters turn to the Scottish DJ/producer for the hands-in-the-air sound of their new single, “Only The Horses.”
The track is co-produced by German electro DJ Alexander Ridha (aka Boys Noize), who remixed Scissor Sisters’ “Invisible Light.” Jake Shears sounds uncannily like Frankmusik at the start of “Only The Horses,” which nicks a snippet of Katy Perry’s “Firework” in the verses. Listen for the toy piano the first time that familiar melody pops up. So charming!
Here’s the lyrics video if you’d like to follow along at home.
If two is a trend, like poppies (via Garbage and Gossip), horses seem to be having a moment in pop music. See Hoodlums’ new track from a couple of weeks ago for a galloping indie rock take on the titular equine. (The single cover for “Only The Horses” sports a zebra, not a horse, of course. Too obvious?)
Scissor Sisters’ forthcoming fourth album, Magic Hour, is due 5/28. Following previous preview “Shady Love,” featuring Azealia Banks (as Krystal Pepsy), the very different sounding “Only The Horses” indicates we’re in for quite the rollercoaster ride of styles this time through.
“Only The Horses” is set for release in the UK on 5/13. No confirmation on US availability just yet.
