Earlier this year, Los Angeles band HAIM (multi-talented sisters Este, Danielle, and Alana Haim, plus drummer Dash Hutton) released their debut EP, Forever. If, like me, you snoozed on that set — Forever didn’t leave much of a lasting impression, with the possible exception of the title track — HAIM’s snappy new single, “Don’t Save Me,” serves as our collective wake-up call.
Simultaneously retro and fresh-sounding, with an airy appeal that’s refreshing at this moment in pop, “Don’t Save Me” should be HAIM’s ticket to the big leagues.
The B-side to “Don’t Save Me,” the percussive “Send Me Down,” is equally fantastic. All the various vocal bits (lead and background) are brilliant. If this was the mid-’80s, I might assume the sisters Haim to be Prince’s latest female proteges.
Purchase HAIM – “Don’t Save Me”/”Send Me Down” via iTunes, Amazon MP3.
