Track of the Moment

So ‘Bad’… it’s good.

From the ashes of Joy Division arose New Order. Now with the long-running New Order officially kaput after Peter Hook called it quits in 2007, remaining members Bernard Sumner, Stephan Morris, and Phil Cunningham (who’d previously replaced Gillian Gilbert) have reconvened as Bad Lieutenant, adding singer-guitarist Jake Evans of Rambo And Leroy.

The new group’s debut LP, Never Cry Another Tear (also featuring contributions from Blur’s Alex James), is out exclusively via Amazon on October 13 (though available digitally on 10/6). For the past few weeks, Bad Lieutenant has been testing the waters with first single, “Sink Or Swim.” First the song was offered as a free download, then a video surfaced (below), and today the song went up for sale via both Amazon MP3 and iTunes (which somehow snagged the single release).

Fingerprints of late-period New Order are all over “Sink Or Swim” (prominent guitars versus synths), but does anyone listening to Sumner 3.0 expect or desire any less? Not me. I’m greeting the arrival of Bad Lieutenant as a very good thing:

Fans of the synthier side of New Order, take note: Bernard Sumner is working on another album, a project with Stuart Price (Madonna, The Killers), which he hopes to finish up after the promotional push with Bad Lieutenant.

Purchase Bad Lieutenant – “Sink Or Swim” via iTunes, Amazon MP3.
