I didn’t care for “Big Mouth,” the preview track Santigold shared last month from her forthcoming sophomore album, Master Of My Make Believe, out May 1. The whiplash-paced schoolyard taunt reminded me of Christina Aguilera’s “Bobblehead,” a Bionic bonus track co-written with Santigold and also produced by Switch, so “Big Mouth” didn’t come off as particularly fresh to these ears (though it’s less grating than “Bobblehead”).
Today, however, Santigold has served up the first official single from Master Of My Make Believe, and “Disparate Youth” more than satisfies this fan of her self-titled debut. Produced by Santigold and Ricky Blaze, and sporting plucked strings, bursts of rapid-fire guitar, and some rave piano — all of which hangs together amazingly well — “Disparate Youth” is a song worth fighting for, the sound of Santigold at her bionic best.
