Track of the Moment

Welcome Back, Visitor

Melbourne-raised, London-based electropop duo Visitor have been kicking around for a few years now, first earning some buzz back in 2010 with their debut single, “Los Feeling.”

With Visitor’s first full-length still in the works, Kyle Gibson and Lucas Gianello have released an EP with two new tracks, “Coming Home” and “RNB,” plus several remixes of the former by Lifelike, FM Attack, Viceroy, and Bestrack.

Produced by Diamond Cut (Queen Of Hearts, Van She) — whom Gibson and Gianello consider their honorary third member but have actually never met, instead ferrying tracks back and forth via the Interweb — Visitor delivers skyward-reaching synthpop that will either bring a tear to your eye or trigger total-body goosebumps depending on your emotional state at the time you hit play. Perhaps both.

Why not give it a go right now and see what happens? “Coming Home” offers a more conventional song structure (brilliantly executed), while “RNB” departs from the playbook. The first half plays like a Harold Faltermeyer soundtrack instrumental unearthed from the ’80s until Gibson’s full vocals come in around the 2:00 mark. But what a payoff. The chorus, which is either full of hope or dashed expectations — “You said that we will find a way” — might be one of 2012’s best.
