Young Galaxy is gearing up to release their fourth full-length album, Ultramarine, on April 23.
While Swedish producer Dan Lissvik returns behind the board for a second round, the Montreal quintet decamped across the sea to record at his Gothenburg studio rather than ferrying tracks back and forth as they did for 2011’s Shapeshifting. A tight ten tracks, Ultramarine also explores a more straight-ahead synthpop sound for Young Galaxy, with Catherine McCandless on sole vocal duty for the first time.
The first glimpse of these shifts for Young Galaxy comes via “Pretty Boy,” the lead track and first single from Ultramarine. With its gently shimmering synths, the song has an unmistakable early New Order sound, but McCandless’ vocals and some well-placed strings create a emotional intimacy that pulls you in closer.
Here’s the tracklisting for Ultramarine:
01 “Pretty Boy”
02 “Fall For You”
03 “New Summer”
04 “Fever”
05 “Hard To Tell”
06 “What We Want”
07 “Out the Gate Backwards”
08 “In Fire”
09 “Privileged Poor”
10 “Sleepwalk With Me”
Young Galaxy – “Pretty Boy” is released on February 5 with a remix by psychedelic dub duo Peaking Lights.
