And with that sparkling bit of wit, Reaper again earned can’t-miss status on my TiVo. The “horramedy” had its second season premiere last Tuesday on The CW, but I’d waited until the weekend to watch.
If you’re new to Reaper‘s realm, the background is this: Sam (Bret Harrison) is the titular reaper, indebted to the Devil (the excellently devious Ray Wise) because Sam’s parents sold his soul before he was born. Joined by friends/co-workers Ben and Sock, and sometime-girlfriend Andi, Sam must capture an escaped soul or two (or 40), while continuing to search for a loophole in his contract with the Devil (who, it has been confirmed, is Sam’s real father).
Somewhat repetitive soul-capturing plots aside, Reaper is a keeper because of some top-shelf acting (the supporting cast in particular) and some very intelligent dialogue. Don’t you love TV shows that demonstrate a high regard for their audiences? That’s why I consider Reaper majorly worth rooting for, a smart comedy-drama hybrid made in the mold of previous CW favorites Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars.
Catch Sam while you still can (remember Lorelai and Rory enjoyed a robust run, but the case was closed on Veronica much too soon). Reaper airs tonight at 8/7 Central on The CW.
(And here’s why I found that Zima reference so very endearing.)
