On Tuesday night’s American Idol, after Jason Castro butchered Bob Marley’s “I Shot The Sheriff,” Simon Cowell bluntly summed up the performance as “utterly atrocious.” Later, Castro flubbed his second turn in the spotlight, blanking on the lyrics to “Mr. Tambourine Man.”
Maybe a better choice would have been to mumble his way through as a tribute to Bob Dylan, who penned the folk-rock classic. But instead of playing the poor man’s Cate Blanchett and thus spare himself the Ruben Studdard play-off for another week, Castro was booted from the competition last night.
Know who’s not there? You, dude.
Castro seems to have made it all the way to the Top Four by dumb luck. Yes, Season 7 has been pretty weak, but could the dreadlocked Dallas native have been less enthusiastic or invested in the outcome? Informed of his departure by host Ryan Seacrest, Castro was visibly relieved. Next week the Top 3 would be performing three songs each! “I didn’t know what I was gonna do,” he said.
So go forth and enjoy the smoke of a righteous fire, young man. But before you tune out, plug in. If you’re willing to go electric like Dylan, there’s a role in the new Muppets movie that seems perfect for you.
