Saved Ferris

When I read that Matthew Broderick had reprised his role as Ferris Bueller for a commercial set to run during the Super Bowl, I had my reservations. No doubt my fellow members of the John Hughes Generation were similarly leery.

Such a spot would almost certainly sully the legacy of that perfect film, one that I’d proudly displayed the poster for in both my childhood bedroom and college dorm room. A cultural touchstone whose line, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it,” served as my high-school class motto. Then it was revealed that the product being marketed was an automobile. And it wasn’t a cherry-red Ferrari — so choice! — but the Honda CR-V.

Bueller?

Bueller?

Even Broderick hesitated to revisit his past, before ultimately agreeing to sign on. And now we know why: Directed by The Hangover‘s Todd Phillips, the new spot for the Honda CR-V is a pitch-perfect homage to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The full, two-and-a-half minute commercial manages to hit on many of the 1987 film’s memorable moments while not being a literal re-do or, worse, a super-lame parody.

I do think the girl on the roller coaster should have offered Broderick some gummy bears. Oh, yeah…

It’s a shame that it’ll be edited down to 60 seconds to run during Sunday’s Super Bowl. Thank Jeebus for the Interweb!
