The White Stripes may have officially gone dark after a 13-year run, but while Jack and Meg have called it quits, the music world isn’t exactly left wanting for boy/girl duos. Kills, Cults, The Ting Tings, Matt & Kim, and Phantogram are just five opposite-sex pairs off the top of my head that are, barring any late-breaking announcements I’ve missed, still pushing forward.
Saragota Springs, New York duo Phantogram recently premiered a video for “When I’m Small” within an episode of MTV’s advertiser-spooking, teens-gone-wild series, Skins. Though the clip is new, “When I’m Small” is taken from their debut album, Eyelid Movies, out since February 2010. But even if Phantogram is only now registering a blip on your musical radar, chances are that you’ll be immediately entranced by Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel’s trip-hop update, which masterfully layers looping guitar, synths, and nicked-up vinyl noise to hypnotic effect.
