Turn It Up

Anastacia’s New ‘Boyfriend’

It’s been four years since Anastacia released her last album, Heavy Rotation, a stretch of time in which the big-voiced Chicago-born singer toured Europe, recorded the odd duet with an international artist or three, teamed up with Tiësto (“What Can We Do”), and twice helped judge TV singing competitions in Britain (including the UK edition of The X Factor).

Anastacia’s latest project is a collaboration with DJ/producer Tony Moran, the stormin’ new dance single, “If I Was Your Boyfriend.” The title, of course, recalls the gender switch Prince suggested in 1987’s “If I Was Your Girlfriend.” Utterly confused as to what he was on about back then — in addition to the fact that it served as the second single from Sign O’ The Times — I’m still thrown by Anastacia’s 21st century role reversal (though I’ve done a lot of growing up in the decades since).

What does it all mean, Mr. Moran?

“It all started at a hotel room in London. Right place at the right time. 2 [sic] friends that have cared about each other since youth. Each looking for ways to expand their horizons, or in my case, taking friendship to a business level. That can be shaky, but not with us. We made the time for each other to test different things until we got it right. ‘If I Was Your Boyfriend’ is [a] song that tells a story about wanting to share an experience that is so satisfying from the other side. Posing the invitation to ‘Come To The Other Side Of Love, Where Surrender Is Enough.'”

Okay. Well, in any event, with Moran’s assistance, “If I Was Your Boyfriend” finds Anastacia returning to the dance sounds that launched her career. Twelve years ago, it was Hex Hector’s remix of her debut single, “I’m Outta Love,” that grabbed ears and moved feet, giving the upstart diva a #2 dance hit.

With a slew of excellent remixes, “If I Was Your Boyfriend” easily renews Anastacia’s relationship with clubland. My pick is the Mauro Mozart remix.
