Pop music doesn’t often get political these days, but Annie has set her sights on Sochi, using the arrival of the 2014 Winter Olympics to bring attention to the Russian government’s shocking crackdown on LGBT citizens and allies via a new song, “Russian Kiss.”
A collaboration with visual artist Bjarne Melgaard and produced by Annie’s close pal Richard X, “Russian Kiss” takes aim at Vladimir Putin (“Shake a fist for the Russian kiss”), while taking inspiration from the moaning climax of Lil Louis’ 1989 club classic, “French Kiss.”
Proceeds from sales of “Russian Kiss” benefit All Out, an organization dedicating to fighting for LGBT equal rights around the world.
Closer to home, Blondie turned down an offer to perform in Sochi this Thursday, citing human rights as the band’s reason for saying nyet.
