Turn It Up

Circling Vuvuvultures

If, like me, you’ve found yourself thinking that music has been sorely lacking in the ‘tough-sounding chick’ department (Chrissie Hynde, Deborah Harry, Siouxsie Sioux, Shirley Manson), let’s give a warm welcome to newcomers Vuvuvultures.

Fronted by Harmony Boucher (sister to Butterfly), the London-based quartet (two gals, two guys) released their debut EP, VVV, earlier this month. Presenting an assertive sound is rooted in post-punk, Vuvuvultures balances those angular aesthetics with great synthpop sensibilities. Add in Boucher’s versatile vocals (Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O comes to mind), and the band’s mix is music to my ears.

Vuvuvultures have debuted a music video for VVV track, “Pills Week,” directed by Tim & Joe:

Stream the entirety of VVV below. My favorite of the four is “Safe Skin,” featuring a stop-start structure and a gorgeous chorus, which surprisingly work fantastically well together.
