Until today I hadn’t done a proper post about Papercuts, though Jason Robert Quever’s (mostly) one-man musical operation has made the Free Weekend list several times, a solid indication that I’ve fallen under the spell of this fellow San Franciscan’s dream pop.
After releasing three albums on two Bay Area record labels, Papercuts’ latest effort, Fading Parade, is the first recorded for Seattle’s finest, Sub Pop. Out since the start of March, there’s something innocently ’50s at the heart of this lo-fi production, with songs like “Do What You Will” and its charming “Home is where you run to” refrain floating past like the lightest of breezes on a bright, fog-free day.
In the “Do What You Will” video, Quever leaves what looks like the most annoying hipster party ever thrown in San Francisco, only to be followed home by some nefarious fog. Frankly, one of Papercuts’ best tunes deserved better than a pale imitation of Lost‘s Smoke Monster:
