…of writhing, sexy, half-naked ladies and gents.
That’s the video treatment for “All The Lovers,” the first single from Kylie Minogue‘s 11th studio album, Aphrodite, released at the start of July, but which I’ve egregiously neglected to mention here. Executive-produced by Stuart Price (Madonna, The Killers, Scissor Sisters), her latest body of work is such an exuberant piece of pop that even the stubbornest sourpuss will find it hard to resist smiling upon playing even a single track.
The clip for “All The Lovers” is will certainly grab your attention. Directed by Joseph Kahn, “All The Lovers” draws from the work of American artist Spencer Tunick, known for his large-scale installations of nude volunteers in various locales. The music video plays like a literal flash-mob, with a ridiculously gorgeous pile of humanity raising Kylie higher and higher atop the deserted streets of downtown Los Angeles:Even with a traffic-stopping clip like that, “All The Lovers” didn’t breach the Billboard Hot 100. However, Kylie did manage to top the Dance/Club Play chart for the fourth time, with the track spending one week at #1.
I’m still kicking myself for skipping Kylie’s all-too-brief tour of North America last fall. Her very first concert trek on this side of the Atlantic was so warmly and wildly received by fans that she’s said it served as the inspiration for Aphrodite. It’s really a brilliant album, packed with so many potential singles. “Get Outta My Way” is slated as single #2 in September, but the title track is the one I’ve kept on Infinite Repeat™.
Sounding so open and airy, “Aphrodite” is superbly mixed for top-down summer driving (kudos, Mr. Price). The song has a musical bit that brings to mind Level 42’s 1986 hit, “Something About You,” and if that indeed was the intent, it’s genius. Well, either way, the track is genius. Hear here:
