You might have already heard OneRepublic‘s “Good Life,” currently playing at the tail-end of the trailer to Anne Hathaway’s new romantic film, One Day. Or perhaps last year’s Eat Pray Love trailer served as your first encounter with the tune. No? Maybe Easy A then? Cougar Town? Rookie Blue?
“Good Life” is a song that gets around.
The fourth single from OneRepublic’s album, Waking Up, which the Colorado band released in November 2009, now gets a refresh from B.o.B., who breathes new life into the tune with his rhythmic flow. The Atlanta alt-rapper’s The Adventures of Bobby Ray was an unexpected highlight of 2010 for me, so I welcome B.o.B.’s return, guesting on someone else’s song (as he did for Jessie J earlier this year).
Is whistling the new trend in pop tunes, next to the sax being back? Britney Spears’ latest single, “I Wanna Go,” prominently features some pursed-lip blowing, as does the new Maroon 5/Christina Aguilera duet, “Moves Like Jagger.” Granted, OneRepublic arguably got there first, as frontman Ryan Tedder explained to NPR last October. “I hadn’t heard a whistle in a song in forever and that’s all I kept hearing on this song [“Good Life”], so I just whistled this melody into the mic and it really is the hook — it’s the catchiest part of the song.”
Well, until B.o.B. popped in on the track, that is.
