Turn It Up

Kate The (Still) Great

Over four years have ticked by since Kate Havnevik released her debut album, Melankton, in the U.S. via Universal Republic. That set found major favor with Alexandra Patsavas, the music supervisor for Grey’s Anatomy, who wove eight of Melankton‘s 12 tracks into the ABC drama, boosting Havnevik’s profile.

On October 10, Havnevik will finally issue a full-length follow up, You, on her own Continentica Records. Re-teaming with Guy Sigsworth (Frou Frou, Björk, Madonna, Alanis Morrisette) who produced several tracks on Melankton, the Norwegian singer-songwriter has been working on new material for a while. In 2009, she released two singles, “Halo” and “Show Me Love,” and a EP, Me. Earlier this year, “Grace,” a non-album track Havnevik penned especially for Grey’s Anatomy, became available for download.

Having successfully turned to PledgeMusic to ask fans to help fund the mastering and manufacturing of You, Havnevik has now set the stage for the album’s release with an EP of “Show Me Love” mixes. While the original mix from Guy Sigsworth has a sunny pep in its step (courtesy whistling and some horns), I prefer the more atmopsheric take from another Melankton collaborator, Petter Haavik, whose piano bit reminds me of Dan Hartman’s “I Can Dream About You.” The Siggi Remix is a stuttering electro revamp with dubstep touches, while Yoad Nevo slows the tempo considerably for his twilight turn.
