When La Roux titled their new odds-and-sods release the Gold Edition, I guess Elly Jackson and Ben Langmaid weren’t kidding around. The synthpop duo have taken home a shiny 24-karat plated GRAMMY for Best Electronic/Dance Album for their self-titled debut.
“I can’t describe how happy this makes us feel,” an obviously delighted Jackson said, standing at the podium with a present (and speaking!) Langmaid during the pre-telecast GRAMMYs. I second her emotion; voters got it totally right, with La Roux beating out fellow nominees BT, Groove Armada, The Chemical Brothers, and Goldfrapp. Jackson also tweeted her thanks shortly afterward:
Taking a break to attend the ceremonies in Los Angeles, Jackson and Langmaid are just in the very early stages of fashioning the follow-up to their now GRAMMY Award-winning album. With super-impatient fans waiting to feed on new material, Gold Edition is designed as a tide-’em-over-’til-then release. Out since Tuesday, the 10-tracker sports acoustic takes, demo versions, B-sides, and several remixes.
Highlights include La Roux’s cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Under My Thumb,” which appeared on Sidetracked, an import-only mixtape compilation that the duo curated, and a “In For The Kill” redux on which Kanye West guests. The latter was released as a digital single last November, but after some brief initial buzz, passed largely unnoticed. Listen to the latter via this unofficial video:
Only minutes prior to their win, La Roux lost in the Best Dance Recording category for the original version of “In For The Kill.” Rihanna’s “Only Girl (In The World)” won the GRAMMY over other dancefloor faves Robyn (“Dancing On My Own”), Goldfrapp (“Rocket”), and Lady Gaga (“Dance In The Dark”).
