League of their own

The Human League’s “Don’t You Want Me,” returned to the pop-culture radar last night, one of the latest songs to get the Glee treatment. The cast version currently sits at #8 on the iTunes Singles chart, and will likely enter next week’s Billboard Hot 100. (I’m digging the new vocal arrangement, actually.)

While the Glee cover of their 1982 #1 smash will surely bring some bank to The Human League, the Sheffield trio isn’t sweatin’ to the oldies. They’re focused on the present, readying the release of Credo, the group’s first new studio album in a decade. As Susan Ann Sulley (the blonde) declared via The Quietus, Credo is no Dare! era retread:

“We don’t think that people who are fans of The Human League because of that song will get this version of the group. They won’t understand. They want to stay there and be nostalgic and get that warm funny feeling when they hear the first few bars of that song… This is not really for them, this is for what’s going on now.”

Emphasizing club sounds over chart hits, The Human League — one of the UK’s earliest purveyors of synthpop, it’s worth noting — teamed with fellow Sheffield act, I, Monster, which produced Credo. “Night People” was released as a single in November, while “Never Let Me Go” arrives next month.

The Human League – “Never Let Me Go” is released on March 21, featuring remixes like these by Aeroplane and Italo Connection. Credo follows a week later. With no word on a U.S. release, I suggest seeking out an import.
