If you’ve ever wondered what Don Draper might listen to on his hi-fi, wonder no more. Last week, AMC and Verve Records launched the Mad Men Character AM Radio Playlists, available exclusively via iTunes.
These five-song playlists were inspired by seven popular characters on the Emmy-winning drama: Don Draper, Betty Draper, Peggy Olson, Pete Campbell, Roger Sterling, Joan Harris, and Salvatore Romano. These musical selections weren’t just randomly thrown together, but shaped by the creative forces behind Mad Men, including creator Matthew Weiner, producer Scott Hornbacher, and music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas.
The Mad Men Character AM Radio Playlists are an inspired idea, even if some of the musical choices are a little too obvious. Liberace, to pick one flamboyant example, pops up on the closeted Sal’s playlist with “I’ll Be Seeing You” (a song which is thematically apropos for the recently bounced Sterling-Cooper art director). And not surprisingly, The Platters’ “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” appears on Don’s. Still, such minor quibbles aside, the Mad Men playlists give fans another peek into the show’s captivating characters. And anything that promotes The Platters (the vocal group makes both Sal’s and Don’s lists) is certainly worth toasting.
Purchase the Mad Men Character AM Radio Playlists ($3.99 each) via iTunes.
