Turn It Up

Rowland’s ‘Glasses’ half-full

When Kelly Rowland stepped out with “Commander,” in May, I thought it could be the single that finally clicked with ears here, as the singer has had more success outside of U.S. borders since Destiny’s Child disbanded. (Rowland’s serious lack of support here has left me wondering whether Beyoncé has placed some sort of Déjà Voodoo curse on her career.)

Radio and pop charts are dominated by dance-pop these days, and because David Guetta produced “Commander” (successful with his spin on the club-friendly sound du jour), the stars seemed to have finally aligned for my birthday mate. Surely Rowland’s assertive slice of electro-house would serve as a career breakthrough. But though clubgoers found favor with “Commander,” awarding her a third Billboard Dance #1, the mainstream completely ignored her orders to move, satisfied to march instead to the beat of others’ tunes.

Well, listen up, America, because it’s time to fall in line and fall in love with Rowland. Her new single, “Rose Colored Glasses,” slows the tempo considerably, but you’ll still find yourself humming along after hearing the first chorus. Besides thanking songwriter Ester Dean (Katy Perry, Rihanna, Mary J. Blige) for this universal tale of blind romantic love, such ear-stickiness is producer Dr. Luke’s stock-in-trade, the hit-meister who Billboard calls today’s new “Tycoon of Teen.”

The tune’s been out since June, though Rowland just released the “Rose Colored Glasses” video yesterday. Shot in 3D by famed fashion photographer Rankin, just try taking your eyes off of Kelly in the clip (seriously, try, she’s in every shot, looking gorgeous even when dressed like a cater-waiter).

So, in sum: Catchy, relatable tune, hit producer, eye-catching clip. Color me optimistic about Rowland’s chances with “Rose Colored Glasses.” Hear hear:

Originally expected in the fall and then slated for this winter, Rowland’s as-yet-untitled third album has been pushed back again. She’s recording additional material, with eyes now fixed on 2011. Another Guetta-produced single, “Forever And A Day,” is scheduled to be released in the UK later this month.
