Turn It Up

Seeing ‘Red’

March 3, 2010 0 Comments

Did you see Daniel Merriweather performing “Red” on Ellen Monday? Or Last Call With Carson Daly? Or Jimmy Kimmel last week, or Letterman a few days before that? We can’t really blame the Aussie artist for blitzing the media, trying his very best to break here in the States.

If Merriweather’s name rings a bell at all, you likely know him as the vocalist on “Stop Me,” one of the highlights from DJ/producer Mark Ronson‘s 2007 covers disc, Version. The track, which served as the set’s first single, brilliantly mashed up The Smiths’ “Stop Me If You’ve Think You’ve Heard This One Before” and The Supremes’ “You Keep Me Hangin’ On.”

After going dark for a time, last June Merriweather released his Ronson-produced debut, Love & War. The album, which features Ronson’s go-to backing band, The Dap Kings, officially appeared on these shores just last week. Lead single “Red” wasn’t an immediate grabber, but after a few spins (smart move, that quartet of TV appearances), Merriweather’s gently swaying tale of heartbreak has settled in quite comfortably in my head.
