The Rec Room: Kelly Clarkson recommends Ashley Arrison

A pre-order for Kelly Clarkson’s upcoming untitled fifth album, expected in September, was posted to her site on Monday, promising an MP3 of her new single “the moment it’s available.” That’s rumoured to be coming next month, but I’m sure you’ll agree that wait for new material from my favorite former American Idol, whose last album was 2009’s All I Ever Wanted, has been interminable.

In the meantime, we’ve had to make do with a country duet with Jason Alden (“Don’t You Wanna Stay”), some running-through-the-hits live sets, and a pair of recent performances of the National Anthem (with Seal at the Indianapolis 500 and solo for Game 5 of the NBA Finals this past Tuesday).

So as the undefined countdown continues, how about a little something that’s been playing in Kelly’s ears in recent days? A couple of weeks ago she shared that she’s been listening to Hearts On Parade, the debut album from Ashley Arrison, released last July.

I love it! The production is tasteful and the lyrics and voice match up so well together! Favorite song right now is “Serenade.” It’s beautiful!

Kelly does have something of a vested interest in Arrison’s success. Not only did she co-write the album’s first single, “Trying To Help You Out,” she also contributed backup vocals. But that’s not the only reason to keep listening. Arrison takes me back to the crisp pop-rock of fellow female singer-songwriters like Dar Williams, Heather Nova, and Abra Moore, making me wish I’d heard “Trying To Help You Out” last summer. Though nearly a year has passed since its release, I’m thankful for Kelly’s helpful nudge.
