Turn It Up

The return of the ginger goddess

Every Tuesday on Twitter, I share a list of new albums, EPs, and singles of note. In scouring several sources, I often uncover surprises that aren’t always trumpeted on the iTunes homepage.

Today, for example, there’s My Secret Life, a new album from Twin Peaks‘ chanteuse Julee Cruise (with DJ Dmitry of Deee-Lite), “Let’s Go Higher,” a new tune from NKOTB’s Jordan Knight, and “The Hunger,” a benefit single with Broadway roots that features Shirley Manson of Garbage with Broadway roots. (The merest mention of Shirley Manson was all I needed to hit ‘Buy.’)

“The Hunger” is taken from a new musical, Prometheus Bound, from Tony and Grammy Award-winning playwright and lyricist Steven Sater (Spring Awakening) with music composed by System Of A Down frontman Serj Tankian. The source material for their piece is Aeschylus’ tragedy about Prometheus, a Titan who gave fire to mankind and was thus chained to a mountain by the god Zeus as punishment. (Maybe that’s where the ‘rock’ part of this musical comes in.)

While incapacitated, Prometheus is visited by Io, a human maiden who Zeus turned into a cow to cover up his earthly desires for her. Describing “The Hunger” on her Facebook page, the ginger goddess Shirley Manson put it more succinctly: “I embody a nymph called Io who was seduced by Zeus… what a slut.” Prometheus is emboldened by Io’s tale, seeing it as a prime example of the tyranny leveled against humans by their immortal tormenters. Manson’s voice makes “The Hunger” a feast for the ears.

Proceeds from the sales of “The Hunger” digital single benefit Amnesty International, an organization that fights for human rights in our more civilized, modern world.

Prometheus Bound premiered on Feburary 25 at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, an engagement that runs through April 2. And if you’ve been hungry for more from Shirley Manson, she’s busy recording the new Garbage album, the band’s first in five years, expected sometime in 2011.
